Are You Working Within Your Strike Zone?

Updated: Oct 31, 2024

In the spirit of the College World Series, I began to think about how successful people can be when they are working within their strike zone.

There is an adage: “Right person, Right job, Right results”. I believe if the right balance is achieved it leads to better employee engagement and happiness. If people are working within their strike zone, they are playing to their strengths. Research has consistently shown that neglecting our strengths can have a negative impact on individual employees, their managers, and the overall succes

s of a company. I am a huge supporter of reflection. If you are frustrated at work, if the end of the day leaves you virtually exhausted, if going to work brings you a feeling of despair, maybe taking time to reflect and ask yourself some hard questions could be helpful to determine if 1) you need to look for a different job or 2) you need to have a hard discussion with your boss/leader about what you are doing every day. It doesn’t always mean you need to leave, but it may mean that you need to come to work doing what you do best.

Okay, here we go. Ask yourself:

  • What am I good at? What are my strengths?

  • You likely know this, so be honest with yourself.

  • What part of my job do I enjoy?

  • What part of my job do I dislike? And why?

  • What comes naturally to me?

  • What gives me energy at work?

  • What makes me proud at work and why?

  • What do others see as good in me?

Also, keep in mind these questions are excellent for managers to discuss with their employees. Remember when an employee is not the right fit for what the job calls for, it is hard on the employee and the manager. If your reflection left you with the question of what to do next, consider that the practice of career and professional development coaching provides a confidential space that helps people by acting as a resource and sounding board and provides unbiased feedback, and will likely spark discussions that provoke thought, and inspire self-reflection which can lead to new discoveries.
